Last Post...

Hi. This will be my last post. Everything comes to an end...and this blog isn't the exception. If you read any of my comments, thanks. Some of them are really bad, but that's because I wasn't interested in some issues (and I'm not very good in English, as you probably can see). Maybe I'll read this blog in some years... maybe I'll never see it again...who knows. What I know is that, as I said, everything comes to an end...and this blog isn't the exception...

And remember... we're all alone. Even you.

My blogging experience

Hi. I always wanted to improve my english skills, but I never had the chance to do it. Even in school, I didn’t have this chance. We had english class, but our teacher talked all the time. We only used english to answer some questions she asked to us. But now it's is different (probably because we are 11, and in the school we were 45). Now we have the opportunity to improve our skills.

One of this skills is writing. That’s why writing in our blogs is one of the main parts of this class. While you are writing, you can feel you are improving. And it feels good.

I have improved my fluency, for example. In school, when I had to redact my answers in the english tests, I had to think a lot before writing my answer. But now, I can write longer texts, in less time and with less grammar mistakes.

So, as you can see I enjoy this activity a lot. The only part I don’t like is the deadline. Sometimes we have a lot to do, and we have to write the post too fast. That’s why I think deadline should be Sunday, at midnight. We could even learn more, because we would not be distracted by other issues, as genetics, sociology, etc.

I’m not good at english. That’s why writing in the blog has been fundamental to me. Probably you are wondering why I didn’t do this before, by my own. Well, because the teacher role is too necessary. How can I improve my english skills if nobody is there to correct my mistakes?

Activities like this one should be implemented in all shools, and not just in the University. By doing this, the educational level of Chile would improve significantly.

What would your ideal job be?

I'd never thought in an ideal job before. I guess it would be a judge. But no like the judges you can see in the court, with their formal suit and their hammer. I’d like to be a judge, but with no restrictions. Without the wall that the law means.

Sometimes, I turn on my TV and I can hear a journalist saying: “J.L. was released, because there wasn't “”enough”” evidence to prove his guilt”. Everyone knows that he did it, because the police found him with the money, and he had been found in the same situation a lot of times before, but there is nothing anyone can do.

Humans aren’t perfect. Laws were created by humans, so laws can not be perfect. That’s something we can all understand. That’s the reason why I think that there should be someone who could judge people with no limitations. Maybe not me, because I would be too severe. Someone that had the power to make this a better world for all of us, by cleaning the society of the people that can not understand that we all must work together.

“Why are you so extremist?” maybe you are thinking. “These people can improve and become better human beings. We have to give them the chance to prove that they can be good people, and a contribution to our society”. Well, I desagree. Most of them are like that(thieve, rapists, etc.) because the society hurt them too much. That’s why they think that their obligation is to damage the rest of the people that are part of this society. Probably they can change. I don´t question that. But I don’t want to risk my family’s integrity for them.

Someday maybe our society will be able to cure this people. But not today. What we need today is punishment…

Free Post - Mishima Yukio

Hi! Today I can write about anything I want, so here I go. I'm going to talk to you about the great Mishima Yukio. He was a very famed writer. He was born in Tokio (Japan), the year 1944. His childhood was marked by his grandmother, Natsu. She was really violent, which influenced Yukio's work. At the age of 12, he returned with his parents, but it wasn't an improvement. His father, Hiraoka Azusa, was too strict. Sometimes, he entered to little Yukio's room, to destroy all the poems he liked to wrote, because "it was for girls". However, Yukio continued his work, with the support of his mother. When he went to Todai (The University of Tokio), the most prestigious university in Japan, he used to study in the day, and write in the night.

Why did I choose Mishima Yukio (which real name was Kimitake Hiraoka) to write this post? Because of his perseverance. We, the medicine students, are used to complain about how hard the classes are, and how we don't have much time for ourselves. Yukio would laugh on us, if he was still alive. Unfortunately, he decided to kill himself in 1970. This suicide is really famous, because he and four members of the Tatenokai (Shield Society), a society that he had founded, tied a commandant in his office. After a speech, Yukio killed himself by seppuku (also known as harakiri). But it was not what he was expecting...

Seppuku is a suicide ritual, in which the person cut his stomach with a knife. Then comes a helper, which cut his head off with a Katana (a japanese sword). The member of the Tatenokai who was in charge of cutting Mishima's head off, tried several times to do it, but he couldn't do it. So another member had to cut his head off. This ritual had been planned by Mishima for a year, and he was really excited about it.

He wrote a lot of books, like "Utage no Ato", "Shiosai", "Kamen no Kokuhaku", etc. I had just read one, because in Chile is too difficult to find is work. It's "Kinkakuji" (The Gold Pavilion). It became an important part of my life, and it will be my favorite book until the moment I die, probably. If you wanna know more about this amazing book, you will have to read it.

So, next time you feel down because of all the work you have to do, think that Yukio is laughing on you.

Education and Prevention in Health Care

In today’s discussion, my group got a lot of conclussions. Our system is not perfect, so we can do a lot of changes. What can we do to improve the health care in people? From the individual view point, what people need is information, but more important than that is the wish to get these information. Today, there is a lot of information in the internet, but if someone has the information but he thinks it’s not important, or maybe simply is too lazy, there is nothing we can do. In this aspect, money is fundamental, too. We said that there is a lot of information in the internet, but not everybody can access it, because it’s not free. From the family view point, we thought that it’s really important to talk about prevention to the children. There are a lot of things that they learn from their classmates, but most of that information is wrong. So, when parents think that they are protecting their sons from these “sick world”, actually, they are being useless for the formation of the kids (in fact, they are being harmfull). It’s almost impossible that a boy or a girl has a good self care, if there is not a good formation in the family level. It will be helpfull to see a family doctor, when the situation is too difficult. From the community view point, we should modificate the public policies, incresing and improving the access to contraconceptives, the sexual education at schools, etc. In conclussion, the family has the main role in the education of their sons in the present, but in long term, the fundamental role is of the government. What can we do to help? Not much, in the present, but that’s why we study so hard. Someday we will be usefull tools from the society. When that happens, we should educate each patient we have, specially the young ones. Also we could try to change the public system and the education programs in general, and the sexual education programms, specifically.

Your favorite subject

My favorite subject so far is genetics. There have been a lot of good subjects, like anatomy or physiology, but I think genetics is the best. Why? Because it's simple and beautiful, at the same time. Furthermore, through the study of human genome, everyone can realize how important is science and how far can it go. In march, when I knew I was going to study genetics this year, I was really glad. "It's gonna be so fun" I thought. Actually, it was not what I was expecting for. Nevertheless, it was still really interesting and inspiring. It's really impressive how things that we can not even see can regulate the cells and make the life possible. Besides, the understanding of DNA and everything that it involves allows to learn about a lot of several diseases and even, in some cases, cure them. So, after you read this text, go to study genetics! You won't regret!

Your future as a health professional

In the future, if I'm still alive, I'll probably be a doctor. Why did I choose this career?. The answer isn't probably what you are expecting for. I chose medicine because I like science very much. Helping people was just an extra incentive. But now, something has changed. I've realized that I can't live just to please myself. I've to think in the rest, specially in the people that is suffering and need to be helped. So, medicine was the perfect choice, after all. I will do my best to help people with their health problems, while I keep learning a lot about human body. After I graduate, I plan to work for a while, so I can see how the doctor's life is. But I will continue my study in the future. If a friend asked me for my opinion about this career, first at all I'll say to him that it's not just a work. It's a life style. If you think it's just another job, you probably won't be able to stand all the years of hard studing that medicine involves. But, if you really want to help people, the study won't be so hard an the reward will be unbelievable.
