A person you admire in your field

I don't know a lot of famous doctors, but I can say with no doubt that William Harvey was one of the important ones in the history of medicine. He was born at Folkestone, Kent, England, in 1578. He studied medicine in Cambrige and in Padua University(Italy) with the famous Hyeronimus Fabricius, who discovered the valves in the interior of the veins. But Fabricius didn't know what these valves were for. Harvey was really curious about this issue, because he never thought that these valves were useless. So he decided to start the study of veins and arteries. Finally, after he made a lot of reasearch, he was able to describe the circulatory system (including hearth and lungs) and the properties of the blood. That's why people admire him, including me. Maybe he wasn't a genius, because he needed a lot of hard work to get the answer he was looking for, but you don't have to be a genius to make great things with your life.

My Favorite Career-related website

My favorite website is “The New England Journal of Medicine”. It is a very interesting site, and its link is http://content.nejm.org/. I like it because it has a lot of recents news about all the fields that medicine can reach, since brain problems until all the diseases associated with the earthquake in Haiti (like people how lost their legs, respiratory infections, etc). I found this site the last summer vacations, one day I was really bored and I didn’t know what to do. So I wrote “medicine journal” at google, and a lot of links appeared. I chose one of them at random, but I didn’t liked it, so i chose another link, and that was this one. I haven’t visited it since we started the classes, because my time is really limited now, but in vacations I used to visit it each four days, more or less. Actually, I don’t know a lot of medicine websites, but I can say that I prefer this one over the rest because the medicine news aren’t just about the scientific aspects of the discovery, but includes the social aspects of diseases (as the prices of the new drugs against them). I would recommend every one how is related to any health field to read it, because science advance every day, and nobody wants to be left behind.

Earthquake

It was Febrary 27, 3:34 at the morning, when I woke up. I remember I was dreaming, when everything happened. My mom was calling me from the living room. At first, I didn’t know what was going on, because I was sleepy, but after a few seconds I woke up completly. Everything started to move, the glases crashed against the floor, and the moon light iluminated my parents faces. My mom was nervous, but my father, just as always, was really calm (but not relaxed). “Where is Claudia?” said my mom, evidently worried. “She is outside, don’t worry” answered my dad. But she was worry. She tried to go after her, but my father grabbed her, so she couldn’t move. When everything had happened already we got out of our house, and met my sister, who was fine.

My First Words

Hi. My name is Alex Ramos and this is my “English blog”. I study in “Universidad de Chile”, and as a big part of the people on this class, I am in second grade of medicine. I hope this signature will help me, through this blog, to improve my english skills (as writing and speaking). I know that it will involve a lot of work, but i’ll do my best.
